Animal Genius (Pilot)
Client:
Offspring Films / National Geographic
In this delightful pilot from Offspring Films, wildlife biologist Liz Bonnin explores the survival strategies of animals worldwide. From meerkat communication in Africa's Kalahari to synchronized sea turtle hatching in Mexico, she uncovers the science behind their remarkable teamwork.
For ‘Animal Genius’ we used 3D tools to craft a sequence demonstrating the hatching process of baby turtles. These turtles were presented in a style that evokes illustration — a beautiful example of how 3D animation (which helped us to keep the turtle more-or-less anatomically accurate) can still look and feel tactile.
We rolled out this warm, inviting style across several graphics sequences in the film, covering meerkats, ants, and molly fish. We found a ‘magnifying glass’ device to bring us into each graphics sequence: a circle comes onto screen and draws us closer, revealing the real science behind these gorgeously captured, closeup images of the natural world and its creatures.
